For over 30 years, the Los Angeles Refinery (LAR) has provided local high school students with a paid 7-week, summer work program. This mentor-led program not only introduces students to a variety of jobs in the refining industry, but also to working in a corporate environment. The Summer Youth Program aims to cultivate our community’s youth by offering them opportunities to explore potential careers, establish real life work experience, and build a solid foundation for future employability in a competitive environment.

Overview
This seven-week program is designed to develop our community’s youth by providing them with the opportunity to discover future potential careers, setting real life work expectations, and building a strong foundation for employability in a competitive environment.
Program Dates & Work Hours
June 15 through July 30, 2026
Monday – Thursday: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Friday: 7:00 AM – 2:30 PM
You must be able to work the entire
7 weeks and the hours listed above.
Scope
This unique program offers classroom training on fundamental life and interpersonal skills, as well as an introduction to the refinery including career within the industry, operations, and safety. The program also provides hands-on experience working with refinery and business unit mentors.

Pay Rate
$19.50 per hour
Eligibility
- Must be 17 to 19 years old at the beginning of the program (June 15, 2025)
- Must be a Junior or Senior in High School
- Must be currently enrolled at one of the following schools:
- Avalon
- Banning
- Cabrillo
- CAMS
- Carson (Including Academies)
- Eagle Tree
- Rancho Dominguez Prep
- Vladovic Harbor Teacher Prep
Former Summer Youth and family members of Marathon employees are not eligible.
Application & SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates may be eligible for the program after successful completion of the following steps:
- Complete online application by March 6th
- If selected, schedule an interview by April 23rd
- Attend scheduled interview (Interview dates: April 30 – May 2)
Selected applicants must complete Background & Medical Screening (includes drug & alcohol testing) by May 22nd
